Have your countertops seen better days? Been hit by a few too many dropped pans, hot pots and showing too much wear and tear? It is probably time to find a solution better suited to your family. Whether you’re looking for countertops that make a statement, can withstand anything that’s thrown at them, or those that will keep you on budget, there is a countertop for everyone. We’ve selected the four most durable options, that will keep your kitchen looking fresh for years to come.
Quartz is a engineered granite alternative, man made from ground pieces of rock rather than entire slabs, that are glued together. This stone is a classic material, that will last and look timeless for years to come. It has quickly become the most popular countertop material because of its durability compared to granite.
Quartz is extremely stain resistant, without needing to be sealed, and is far more resistant to chips and scratches. Made up of waste or scrap rock, quartz is a green alternative to granite or marble.

Still considered one of the most desirable features in a home, granite countertops are naturally beautiful and timeless. Entire slabs of stone are extracted to create these countertops that were, until recently, the most popular – now second to quartz.
Granite will stand up to stains and discolouration as long as it is resealed annually. You can put a hot pot on it without damage, and it resists chipping and cracking better than other materials.

The most cost effective option, laminate countertops can give the look of stone without the price tag. Just LOOK at the photo above – you'd never know that's a Formica countertop! Made of paper and plastic, laminate doesn’t need to be resealed, stained or maintained with any special products. If you’re designing your home for resale, avoid laminate – 40% of buyers say they are immediately turned off by homes with laminate counter tops.
Of all the materials, laminate is the most prone to showing wear and tear. It is easily scratched, dented, cracked... and DO NOT put a hot pot on it. Laminate is a pain to repair: when damaged, entire sections must be removed and replaced.

If you’re looking to make a statement, there is nothing a bold tile can’t say. Available in every colour and pattern you could ever dream of, tile gives you the ability to mix and match and create a kitchen that is uniquely your own. Despite the beautiful look of tile, it can be a bit of a pain in countertop form. Because it is not a flat surface, glasses, bowls and plates can be more wobbly than on other types of countertop, which can lead to spills and broken dishes.
Tile is durable against scratches, stains and heat, but will crack easily if you drop a pot or pan. Luckily, replacing single tiles can be relatively simple, if done by a Pro. Though the tiles themselves are easy to clean, the grout between them can be a dust magnet and breeding ground for bacteria. It is important to reseal the grout annually to keep them sanitary.
